Welcome to the NHS South, Central and West Remote Access Information Page.

NHS SCW have provided a secure system for remote access to a range of NHS systems with the aim of giving every user who needs remote access a connection from any device while maintaining the security of the NHS network at all times.

Users on NHS computers are provided a full remote connection and other users will receive limited access to systems in the most secure method available.

Please ensure that you complete all the following steps to make your Remote Access session work correctly.

To ensure complete compatibility between your PC and the Remote Access Portal, please read the following sections carefully:

  1. Prepare your computer for the Portal and Remote Access.
  2. Understand the One Time Code security system.
  3. Access the Portal and Remote Access.

1. Prepare your computer for the Portal and Remote Access.

Install Anti-Virus software

Ensure your anti-virus software is up to date. The Portal will not allow you to connect unless you are running a main stream anti-virus product. Suggested manufacturers are:

  • McAfee
  • AVG
  • Microsoft
  • Sophos
  • Computer Associates
  • F-Secure
  • Kaspersky
  • Trend Micro

2. Understand the One Time Code security system.

One Time Codes are used to log in to the Remote Access VPN and the Portal. A One Time Code (or OTC) is worked out using a randomly generated string of numbers and the PIN included in your welcome email. How you work out your OTC depends on how you receive your security strings.

Text Messages

Security strings can be sent to you via text messages. Your first security strings will most likely come through in a text message. To view the process of decoding your OTC, please read through the user guide document.

Smartphone App

If you are using one of the following types of mobile phone, you should be able to download the "Swivel" app. This will allow you to store up to 99 security strings on your phone at one time. Click on your type of phone to view instructions for that phone.

3. Access the Portal and Remote Access.

The Portal

Once you have read through all the information in Step 1 to ensure your computer is compatible for the Portal, you can start using it. You can access the Portal here:


Once you are there, enter your username and work out your OTC as described in Step 2.

If you are unsure which security string you should be using, press the "Get Index" button after entering your username. The box beside the button will tell you which string to use.

If you require further instructions, please refer to the user guide document. If you have lost your text message with the security strings, type "1111-03" into the OTC box to be sent a new set.

Installing the Portal software

Once you have successfully logged in to the portal, you will be required to install some additional software on your computer. The Portal will do this for you, however you must Accept and Run the software before it can install.

A number of pop-ups will appear, asking for you to authorise the installation of the software. Each box will allow you to either Accept the software or Run the software. You must install all of the software before you can access the main Portal.

Best West & CCG Staff: How to connect to Terminal Services

Once the portal has installed the necessary software, you will be given a list of links to various resources on the Portal. If you work for Best West or a CCG, you should have a link to a terminal server for your area, which will look like this:

To connect, simply click on the link and the Remote Access session will begin in a new window. You can change the settings of this window by using the Edit button (a symbol of a pen).

Once your Remote Access session has loaded, you can log in with your normal username and password.
